Target GiftCard Balance (US): Scope, Workflow and FAQ

An empty status means the card is not activated or not enabled, and GiftVeri does not send the balance query. A non-empty status means the card already holds data, so GiftVeri continues the balance query and returns the balance and other details the brand sends. The check is read-only and does not affect later reloading of the card.

Scope

For a US Target GiftCard you own or are authorized to use. In GiftVeri, choose Target, enter the 15-digit card number and the Access Number or PIN, and complete the check with your own Target account. On a physical card, those details sit under the silver strip on the back. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and other third-party prepaid cards sold at Target do not belong in this entry. The check only reads the balance. It does not save the card to a Wallet, redeem, shop, combine, transfer or reload.

Have the card number, access code and a Target account

Target’s help says an online check uses a 15-digit card number and an Access Number or PIN, and signs in to a Target account. On a physical card, the numbers are under the silver strip on the back. Reading the result

Balance, failure and unknown stay separate

GiftVeri shows the balance it read, a failure, and an unknown result separately. An open page, a successful sign-in or a valid session does not replace the balance.

No amount is not $0

Access failure, rate limits, a verification page, a timeout and a response that cannot be parsed stay failed or unknown. They do not mean the card is invalid, inactive or empty.

Store cards and prepaid cards stay apart

Empty at first use, and the money is in someone else’s Circle

The person who received the card was the first to scratch the film. The number on the back of the card reached an agent who could see the card added to someone else’s Circle account, and a replacement card came later. An empty balance means there is no money now. It does not show whether the package was swapped.

A pull-tab package can still be $0

The buyer had checked the pull tab and expected that package to stop a swap. Adding the card to a wallet showed zero, and the record showed it spent in another state the day before Christmas. The new package was not evidence that nothing had been touched.

unable to activate, before pay is pressed

When that message appears before pay is pressed, the register is treating the card as a new sale, which is why it says it cannot activate. Scanning after pay is using a card that already has money. That message is not the empty status from the pre-activation check.

A Starbucks card at self-checkout may have to wait

A variable-amount Starbucks card was scanned once at a Target self-checkout. The clerk said payment completes activation, and the Starbucks site may take 30 to 60 minutes to show the amount. That wait is not an empty pre-query status.

Two weeks in the package, already spent at another store

Two weeks passed between purchase and first use, and the card stayed in the package. The $20 was already spent at the Atlantic Terminal store, in another state. A package that is still there does not show whether the card left your hands during those two weeks.

The PIN digits came off with the coating

The PIN digits came off when the coating was scratched. The service desk said they cannot reissue the card. The number to call is the one printed on the back of the card. The digits are no longer on the card, and this page does not reconstruct them.

Does the balance stay on the card after a check?

Someone asked me to read out the card number and access code. What should I do?

A Target card is empty the first time it is used. Where is the money?

A call to the number on the back of the card found the money already in someone else’s Circle account. An empty balance means there is no money now.

A Target card sat in the package for two weeks. Why was it already spent at another store?

The PIN digits came off when I scratched the card. Can the service desk reissue it?
